The U.S. Military has created a breakthrough in modern warfare. Bullets have been created so that they can actually adjust their flight path to hit moving obstacles such as a running enemy soldier. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has made this technology so simple to use that not only professionally trained shooters, but novices can hit their targets. This is great for American Snipers, because typically they have to shoot with strong winds and rough conditions. This technology will make snipers more accurate, thus causing less blowback from missing targets. Also, this could save more snipers' lives, because the more they shoot, the higher the risk of their position being compromised.
The video released by DARPA shows how the system uses real time optical guidance. This is a major breakthrough, because if optical guidance can be applied to a small .50 caliber round, it could also be easily applied to any larger rounds of ammunition. In the video below, it shows how the bullet changes its path. Also, it compares the shot of an expert and a novice sniper and both hit their target.
Mr Huff thank you for you post. This is actually one of the advanced tools that can be used when trying to aim a sophisticated target. I think the optical feature is also great because it serves a great purpose when the enemy is moving very fast.
ReplyDeleteMy only skepticism is how does one differentiate an enemy from a friend? If a novice shooter is using these bullets in real combat, how would he make sure that he is hitting a hostile moving target? This may be great for marksmanship, but in terms of actual wartime use, I wouldn't hastily utilize this product.
ReplyDeleteBecause of my marketing background, I'd be interested to talk to DARPA about pricing of these bullets as well as compatible guns. I think it would be an interesting dynamic if both of these products were being marketed at the same time.
This is a very intriguing topic. I believe the self steering bullet will be a tremendous advantage for the U.S. Military. Not only will this new technology help trained shooters more effectively hit their targets, but it will also help increase the artillery supply.Since, artillery will be more accurate with hitting moving targets; less artillery will be wasted.
ReplyDeleteTechnology for our generation is very advanced. The fact that there will now be a bullet that steers towards a target is very advanced technologically. It will be very efficient for the military. However, I am worried about the technological mishaps that could possibly occur. Nevertheless, great informative blog.
ReplyDeletei really like this technology because by increasing the accuracy of the novice shooter you will also decrease friendly fire. in addition time will not be wasted aiming trying to hit a target just programming a location or target to hit it'll make us faster

ReplyDeleteThis technology will decrease the amount of friendly fire that unfortunately takes the lives of our own soldiers. This will also allow soldiers to more accurately hit their target in a faster time
ReplyDeleteThis technology is great and will be a great addition to what the military already uses, I can already see the multiple upsides to its use. My only concern is the cost and how that will impact how frequently this will be used. I can see how the cost of this ammunition will limit its actual use in the field. The next step is searching for a less costly way to make the same ammunition or possibly one day even better.
ReplyDeleteThis is very interesting. I could see both positive and negative effects from this. A group such as ISIs could use these bullets in ways to increase terrorism. Hopefully the government could set different barriers that could scramble the signals in certain areas to ensure that were are protected.
ReplyDeleteThis is crazy! The way technology has advanced is amazing. My biggest concern on this issue is our safety. This technology has the potenial to do great harm if in he wrong hands.
ReplyDeleteI feel like the future is finally coming closer than we think. This will bring the US military more dominance in battle. The only drawback is if the technology leaks out to the civilians. This could bring street violence to an all time high by making targets more easier to hit.

ReplyDeleteThis is good technology, we see these in movies all the time but now its coming to life I believe this is great product if its in the right hands. It can also be a huge treat if an enemy gets it.
