Tile: Changing The Way We Look At Tiles Forever

By: Kalil Suber

Tired of losing everything? Feeling old at a young age? They have finally created a solution! Tile has created a locating device far more advanced than your average beeping locating device and it works with more than just your keys. You can attach the tile device to anything! Personally, my girlfriend and I lose our keys everyday and spend an extra 15-20 minutes just trying to get out of the door for class. This app would allow us to save time and give us less of a headache.

The process of using the app is extremely simple. First you would of course purchase your tile(s). Next, you would download the tile app. Take it out the package and hit the "E" on the tile. It is now alive! Your next step would be deciding what you would like to tile. For example, for your laptop you would give it a name like "laptop". Then stick a tile to the laptop and then take a picture. You can have multiple tiles connected to the tile. Each item has a circle of bars that fill up one by one the closer you get to the item. A grey circle says your tile is out of range but the app can pull up where it last saw your car. For all the vigilantes out there, there is a community find option. Anyone in the tile community can help find your community. You no longer have to mark the item as lost because the tile will automatically update its status.

The app was started through crowdstarter. It is similar to gofundme but for start up projects. Tile was able to raise over $2 mill with over 49,000 pre-orders of the tile back in 2013. There are a few suggestions for the app such as a feature to share tiles with family members or an alternative to the sealed battery back of the tile. Also, I love the layout of the site. It is very simple and smooth. Everything is right in front of you. Instead of having just a FAQ(Frequently asked questioned page) there is a search bar that allows you to find anything you need to know about the tile app from warranty issues to bugs in the system. Its just really cool in my opinion that their site is user friendly and not just an ego trip about the app.

Overall, I believe this is a great idea and the potential is extremely high for this app and this type of technology may be able to help solve crimes or find missing kids one day. Who knows. But what we do know is this is another example of technology making life easier for us as humans. We may be afraid of the change that is amongst us but to be honest it is inevitable so everyone should just get with the program.

  7. I definitely want and need this! This revolutionary idea will make life easier and save time for many consumers with a fast-paced life. The only problem I could see is that making the device smaller so it can fit on other devices, but again, maybe making it smaller could cause another issue. There are many creeps and weirdos out in the world that would try to use such a device to find and prey on unsuspecting victims without them even knowing. It is a great product, but could also cause some problems depending on how consumers plan to use it.

  8. This app is a great idea. I would definitely utilize this app because I always lose things. The technology behind the app is simple, but yet complex to be on the front end of innovative technology. The tile is offered in a unique design small and slick, key ring accessible which makes things easier. I will do more research on the app and the device and look into getting one in the near future.

  9. This is one of those things I think we all thought would be a great idea. I am sure many of the initial buyers were individuals who at one point thought something like this should exist. I think it is a great idea as long of the proper security measures are built in. For example, I would want to make sure that the tile community can not locate my items unless I report them as lost or solicit their help in finding something.

I will definitely be one of the most faithful customers to this product simply because i have been waiting for something like this to come out. The engineers who designed this technology were really innovative and furthermore they were really thinking about the needs of the customers. If this product is marketed correctly then it could really take the market by storm. This is really a thing of the future.

  11. I believe this idea is very helpful especially for people who tend to loose things often. What i want to know is as far as the lost bike example shown in the video, if the bike was stolen would the person that stole the bike be able to remove the tile from the bike or is the tile locked on. If so I believe this would be very useful to tracking down lost or stolen items.

  12. This is an excellent post Mr. Suber. The app Tile is innovation at its best. the Tile app is useful in many ways. I lose my keys quite often so tile will be really beneficial to me. I believe Tile will help reduce theft as well. Criminals will be discouraged to commit crimes because it can be easily tracked now. I believe the older generation will find Tile the most useful because of their short term memory. I am curious how much Tile cost. But overall this is a great invention.

  13. The innovation behind Tile is absolutely brilliant. For years, people have always thought or wished that there could be an alarm or a way to find your keys or other things when you lose them. I for one, lose things very often. I believe this is a piece of technology that could change the lives of many people. The creators of Tile putt a lot of work into ensuring that Tile is an efficient way of locating valuables, which is a necessary piece of technology.

  14. I believe that tis idea is a great one! Just to think about some capabilities, parents could attach these to their children's backpacks or to their clothing. A good innovation Tile should consider is adding audio and video capabilities that can be turned on and off from the app itself. The app could then be connected to ustream that streams these capabilities live. Kidnappers beware!
