Recently in class, Professor Sistrunk introduced the idea that the United States is being held captive by telecom companies such as Comcast and AT&T, and the strength and speed of the Internet is extremely weak compared to that of other countries. Additionally, customer service for both of these services has been recorded as extremely sub-par. Observing the recent recordings that have been distributed online, it appears that Comcast and AT&T do not care about the customer at all, and they are able to do this because of their stronghold on the industry. However, there does seem to be a new competitor emerging that has the potential to give both of these organizations a run for their money. Google is currently in the process of rolling out its new Internet service, Google Fiber. This has the potential to serve as a faster alternative to regular service providers.
The attached article is from the Washington Post, where analysts believe that Google will one day rule this industry as well. As a consumer, I have to agree. Google Fiber is a completely Wifi based service which will change the nature of the way people use phones, watch TV, and use the Internet altogether. Faster Internet speeds mean that users will not have to pay for extra phone or TV service, as they can stream the exact shows they want and call friends through the internet instead of phone lines. If they choose to, Google will be able to offer this service at a considerably cheaper price, which would mean the end of old telecom services. However, one has to consider that Google might even offer this service for free
In the article, it outlines that telecom providers are currently trying to bar this from happening via legal action, arguing that they do not currently have access to the right documentation to institute their new fiber wires. Regardless of their efforts, it seems that the immediate future of the Internet is cheaper and more efficient.

This is very interesting, Google is really trying to take over the industry. With this new business approach, Google will singlehandedly wipe out all of it's competition, and also provide value to it's customers. This service will make life more simple for internet users, if the service will be offered for free this could really change the world. The limitations of the wifi in the United States can be fixed, but if you leave it up to the companies in the industry now it will not happen. They are attempting to set their Fiber services up in major US locations which will provide users in it's target market with the proper service. Google is a great company and this blog presented me with new information that I am glad to learn about, hopefully in the future we see Google Fiber change our lives as we know it.
ReplyDeleteI think Google has realized that reliable and fast Wi-Fi service remains an obstacle for the Internet of Things and has decided to provide this Wi-Fi service with the hopes of accelerating the development of the Internet of Things. Google will remain one of the primary developers of products for the Internet of Things, along with Apple and others. Google's development and implementation of Fiber is much like Tesla releasing its patents. They both hope to accelerate the adoption and implementation of the necessary technology for their respective products to grow in market share.
