Glass Technology

BY: Kevin Butler

On February 4, 2015 a video was posted that suggested that one day we will all be using a seamless glass technology as a way to stay connected and access information. They went on to say that although the scale of how they demonstrated the technologies use is not practiced there is still real life application of this modern advancement.

As, a consumer product I have a lot of questions about the feasibility of  how corning will get this product to your average household. I would think even if the price of the technology were affordable the installation cost on an older model home would be significant. So, now you are limiting you are relying on homebuilder industry to see the vision and incorporate this technology in their new construction. The consumer base for such a product would be too small to even be profitable I would assume. You would have to have someone who wanted glass throughout the entirety of there home, in their office, as well as convince automotive manufacturers to somehow install a safe glass dashboard. Although, it seems like a really good idea I don't think the world is going to run off of glass on the scale the video portrayed.

I watched a video a couple years ago with a similar technology being featured. GM challenged Bezalel academy graduate students to conceptualize a new experience for rear seat passengers. They came up with these interactive apps you could play with on your car window. Check out the video!

  1. Interesting video. My only hope is that as our world becomes more connected to the internet that securitization follows suit. Currently, security seems to lagging behind innovation with even the most high profile corporations and government agencies facing data breaches caused by outside sources. Anytime I log into my bank account, I do it with knowing somebody very well can be looking at it with me, after having hacked my computer or the website itself. For now, I rest on the assumption that the criminals have more lucrative targets.

  2. I believe this was a very interesting video. After watching the video, if the technology is one day accessible to the average American citizen, I for see an app market for cars mainly in the entertainment sector.

  4. Amazing car window technology! I think it will post a threat to the road. How sure are we that this will not cause any distraction while traveling on the road? It seems to be as tricky as texting and driving. Great idea, though! Love the idea of revolution. Technology can only move us forward.

  5. Interesting post. However, I would much rather spend the money on a laser projector and use the cell phones front camera for gesture capture and rear camera for augmented reality and combine them both with the phones GPS for direction indicators.
